TL;DR: At a Glance
- The Magic Age: We recommend scheduling your child’s first official dental visit around age two.
- The Goal is Zero Fear: The “Happy Visit” involves riding the dental chair, seeing the tools, and counting teeth. No scary needles or drills.
- The Reward: Every great patient gets to leave with a prize!
- Family Convenience: As a family-owned practice in Omaha, we can schedule your child’s Happy Visit at the same time as your own cleaning.
When Should My Child Have Their First Dental Visit?
We recommend scheduling your child’s first official dental visit around age two, unless you notice a dark spot or have a specific concern earlier.
Bringing them in at this age allows us to monitor the healthy development of their primary (baby) teeth. More importantly, it helps them get used to the sights, sounds, and friendly faces of our Midtown Omaha dental office before they ever need actual treatment. Waiting until a child is in pain to visit the dentist for the first time is the leading cause of lifelong dental anxiety. We want their first memory of Parr Dental to be entirely positive.
What Happens During a “Happy Visit”?
The primary goal of the Happy Visit is to establish absolute trust. We do not perform invasive treatments during this introductory appointment. Instead, we focus on fun, familiarization, and education:
- The Ride: We let your child ride the dental chair up and down, turning the experience into a fun “spaceship ride.”
- The Tour: We introduce them to “Mr. Thirsty” (our suction tool) and the “water shooter.” By letting them feel the water on their hand first, they aren’t startled by the noises or sensations.
- The Count: We simply look inside their mouth and count their teeth to make sure everything is growing properly and check for early signs of decay.
- The Prize: The best part of the visit! Every great patient gets to leave with a reward from our prize bin.
How Can Parents Prepare Their Kids for the Dentist?
As parents, your attitude toward the dentist heavily influences your child. You can help ensure a successful visit by speaking positively about the dentist at home.
- Read and Watch: Read children’s books or watch fun cartoons about going to the dentist.
- Play Pretend: Practice counting teeth at home with a toothbrush, taking turns being the “dentist” and the “patient.”
- Watch Your Words: Avoid using words like “shot,” “drill,” “pull,” or “hurt.” Instead, tell them the dentist is going to “count their teeth” and “tickle them with a special toothbrush.”
- Lead by Example: Because we are a family-owned dental practice in Omaha, we highly recommend bringing your child along to watch your routine cleaning. When they see Mom or Dad relaxed and smiling in the chair, they realize there is nothing to fear.
